Certify your French language skills with TEF Québec (TEFAQ), recognized since 2006 by Quebec’s Ministry for Immigration, Francization and Integration (MIFI).

The TEF Québec is intended for certain immigration procedures in Québec, according to the rules of the Ministry of Immigration, Francisation, and Integration (MIFI). Your results are valid for these uses.

For any questions regarding your situation, you can contact MIFI. If you wish to use your results for another procedure, contact us. We can tell you whether the TEF Québec is suitable or direct you to another TEF or another French assessment that better fits your project.

What are the TEF Québec tests?

For an immigration application to Québec

You must take 1, 2, 3 or 4 tests, depending on the immigration program you are applying for:

Reading comprehension

Objective: Measure your ability to read and understand written documents.

Content: 40 questions

Duration: 1 hour

Format: Multiple choice questionnaire (MCQ)

Scale:
Correct answer = +1 point
Wrong answer / No answer = 0 points

Listening comprehension

Objective: Measure your ability to understand spoken French by listening to audio documents.

Content: 40 questions

Duration: 40 minutes

Format: Multiple choice questionnaire (MCQ)

Scale:
Correct answer = +1 point
Wrong answer / No answer = 0 points

Written expression

Objective: Measure your ability to express yourself in written French.

Content: 2 sections 

Duration: 1 hour

Format: The test is divided into two sections, A and B.

  • Section A – 25 minutes
    Write the continuation of an article (80 words minimum)
  • Section B – 35 minutes
    Express and justify a point of view (200 words minimum)

Oral expression

Objective: Measure your ability to communicate orally with an interlocutor.

Content: 2 sections 

Duration: 15 minutes in total  

Format: The test is divided into two sections, A and B.

  • Section A – 5 minutes
    Obtaining information
  • Section B – 10 minutes
    Expressing an argument to convince

Each test can be taken independently of the others.

For a Canadian citizenship application

You must take 2 compulsory tests:

Listening comprehension

How long is my test valid for?

Your results certificate is valid for 2 years (from the date of issue).

What TEF Québec level do I need?

For immigration to Quebec:

The level required differs depending on the immigration program. Refer to the MIFI Quebec ministry website to check the conditions that apply to a particular program: www.quebec.ca/immigration/permanente.

For applications for Canadian citizenship:

A minimum level of EQNCF 4 is required for the speaking and listening tests.

I already have a TEF Canada certificate that is less than two years old. Is it recognized for immigration to Quebec?

Your TEF Canada certificate is recognized by the MIFI for immigration to Quebec.

Please note! The TEF Québec (TEFAQ) is not recognized by the IRCC for your application to immigrate to Canada.

Are there any TEF Québec exemptions?

To be sure you have to take the TEF Québec (TEFAQ), contact the MIFI directly.

What is the policy for processing my personal data?

When you register for TEF Québec, Le français des affaires of the CCI Paris Ile-de-France collects a certain amount of information in order to process your application and in accordance with Canadian immigration laws.

If you achieve the required level, your personal data will be made available to the Québec authorities. It is not communicated to other third parties. If you object to this transmission or if you modify or delete data, your immigration or citizenship application cannot be processed by the Canadian authorities.

Your data will be kept by Le français des affaires of the CCI Paris Ile-de-France for 10 years. Data that may be transmitted to Québec authorities will be stored in accordance with Canadian law.

The information collected may also be processed for the purpose of carrying out studies and surveys in order to improve our services. In this context, data collected during surveys is not communicated to third parties and is kept for a period of one year.

In accordance with the French Data Protection Act of January 6, 1978, as amended, and the Data Protection Regulation (EU) 2016-679, and within the framework and limits set by these texts, you may exercise your right to access data concerning you and have it rectified or deleted, which you may do by contacting francais@cci-paris-idf.fr or, in the event of difficulty, the Data Protection Officer at cpdp@cci-paris-idf.fr.
