From Language to Employment: French is at the heart of integration pathways

Wednesday 20 May 2026

An inspiring initiative to promote french as a professional skill !

Proficiency in professional French is now a key factor in gaining access to employment and having one’s skills recognized. In Quebec, where the language shapes both social integration and professional life, tailored, certification-based programs can make all the difference. Maikel Rodriguez’s story illustrates how French for specific purposes has become a powerful tool for sustainable integration.

Why has language been a driving force for integration in your journey?

I arrived in Quebec in 2011 as a skilled worker; I had a background in education and was highly motivated. I quickly realized that nothing was possible without a good command of French.

“Learning French was a defining moment in my journey. It allowed me not only to communicate more effectively, but above all to understand Quebec society, its norms, its values, and its relationship to language.”

I have personally experienced what many newcomers go through: the feeling that language is the key to putting down roots, building connections, and entering the job market.

Why did you decide to open a language center in Montreal?

While working at a community organization, I saw the limitations of the existing system: long waiting lists, schedules that were difficult to reconcile with work, and groups of people who were left behind. Many motivated individuals simply did not have access to classes tailored to their needs.

“I wanted to create a place that was different ; a school that was accessible, flexible, and inclusive.”

ELC College was founded with this goal in mind: to provide a space where language learning serves as a true springboard for professional growth, regardless of one’s status or background.

Why did you include the Professional French Certificates in your program offerings?

As the school grew, one question kept coming up among our students: how could they demonstrate their level of French to employers in a concrete way?

“I wanted a rigorous, demanding, and widely recognized certification that could turn language proficiency into a professional advantage.”

The Professional French Diplomas (DFP) offered by the Paris Île-de-France Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCI) have become the obvious choice. They are based on real-world work situations and perfectly align with market expectations, which is fully in line with our educational mission.

It takes time and perseverance to demonstrate the added value of these diplomas, establish their recognition, and raise awareness of them among local businesses.

We have exceptional teams, trained to speak publicly, structure our processes, and engage in ongoing dialogue with employers.

Today, things are changing, and the credibility of the Diplomas and the reputation of our learners are well-known.

What concrete benefits do you observe for learners?

The benefits are very tangible.

“Learners receive official, recognized proof of their ability to work in French. This boosts their confidence, credibility, and employability.”

Many students gain a better understanding of the skills expected in the professional world: writing emails, participating in meetings, and communicating with clients.

These skills are immediately transferable and valuable in the Quebec job market.

Why recommend these certifications to other institutions?

I recommend these certifications for their high standards and their alignment with the professional world. This allows institutions to structure their programs, enhance the professionalism of their offerings, and build strong ties with businesses.

Professional French Diplomas are not merely an assessment tool; they have become a powerful driver of institutional and regional development.

Maikel Rodriguez arrived in Quebec in 2011 as a skilled worker and quickly realized the importance of the French language as a means of social and professional integration. With a master’s degree in education, he first went through the process of learning French himself before embarking on a career in language teaching.

In addition to his French classes, he taught Spanish at a private school. This initial exposure to teaching sparked a broader calling: to create a learning environment where languages serve as bridges to employment, integration, and personal fulfillment.

Now Director of CollĂšge ELC in Montreal, an accredited center for Business French, he speaks today about the role of Professional French Diplomas in Quebec and their tangible impact on learners and businesses.
