Prepare for the Examen civique before your exam!

  • Start early : set yourself a goal, for example, 15 minutes of revision per day for a week. Don’t wait until the last minute to prepare and maximize your chances of passing your test. 
  • Use reliable sources : depending on how much time you have available, you can prepare at home or online. Visit the official Formation civique website to access the topics and concepts covered in the form of fact sheets. You can also practice with the official lists of questions published for each version of the exam (CSP = carte de séjour pluriannuelle (multi-year residence permit), CR = carte de résidence (residence card). 
  • Before the big day : make sure you have received your invitation and prepare a valid ID (residence permit for all candidates; passport or ID card for EU nationals).

What do I need to learn to succeed?

The Examen civique assesses your civic and cultural knowledge of French society, in French. 
 
It consists of 40 questions : 28 multiple-choice questions and 12 role-play exercises, to be completed on a computer. 

The topics covered are divided into 5 themes : 

  • Principles and Values of the French Republic (11 questions) 
  • Institutions and Political System (6 questions)
  •  Rights and responsibilities  (11 questions) 
  • History, geography, and culture (8 questions)
  •  Living in French society (4 questions)

What level of language proficiency do I need to understand the questions ?

The Ministère de l’Intérieur adapts the language level of the items to take into account the linguistic requirements of the application : 

  • Examen civique for a carte de séjour pluriannuelle (multi-year residence permit) (level A2) 
  • Examen civique for a residence card (level B1)
  •  Examen civique for naturalisation (level B2) 

What is the minimum score required to obtain the certificate of completion ?

To pass: you must get 80% of the answers correct (32 correct answers out of 40). 

Here is the scoring system : 

  • Each question has only one correct answer. 
  • Each correct answer = 1 point.
  •  Incorrect answers or unanswered questions = 0 points.
