TEF Canada

TEF Canada is an obligatory test for economic immigration programmes that require proof of linguistic ability, at the request of Immigration and Citizenship Canada.

TEF Canada also provides indispensable proof of the holder’s French language proficiency when he/she applies for Canadian Citizenship.

What is tested?

TEF Canada assesses your ability to write and speak French, using the following sections:

  • Oral comprehension: 40 minutes – 60 questions
  • Written comprehension: 60 minutes – 50 questions
  • Oral expression: 15 minutes – 2 topics
  • Written expression: 60 minutes – 2 topics

You will receive a certificate with your TEF Canada results.  

It details your score for each section. To find out the Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) corresponding to your score, please refer to this Table of correspondence with CLB.

Data protection policy

When you register for TEF Canada, the Paris-Ile-de-France CCI French for Business will collect a certain quantity of information in accordance with Canadian laws on immigration applications.

If you obtain the required level, your data will be sent to the Canadian authorities. If you refuse to allow your data to be transmitted in this way, or if you modify or delete the data, the Canadian authorities will not be able to process your immigration or citizenship application.

French for Business will store your data at the Paris Ile-de-France CCI for 10 years. Data transmitted to the Canadian authorities will be stored in accordance with Canadian law.
